Word lagging on Mac
Hello. I am trying to format a book with styles, 600+ long, to get it ready for InDesign. That means I have to apply character and paragraph styles to all its elements. It's running painfully slow, and takes a few seconds just to select some text, or move from page to page. With a document this large, it's a torture. What I've already tried: • disabling tracking • copying part of the text into a new document to see if smaller file will run better • getting rid of all unneeded styles • getting rid of everything that's not text (some charts and graphs) • contacting Microsoft tech support • uninstalling and reinstalling Word If anyone knows of a possible reason/solution, I'd be very grateful.marinadrukmanJun 13, 2025Copper Contributor202Views0likes1CommentCustom TOC nightmare
Hi, really need some help or I might go out of my mind! I'm formatting an ebook for KDP. Has to have a custom TOC at the beginning. I've done this many times (over 40 in fact!) and never had a problem, but this time KDP didn't recognise my TOC, says "Missing" So I went back, re did the TOC from the beginning, followed all the steps. Highlighted each heading and updated Heading one to match, typed in Table of Contents at the beginning, went to References and Auto table of contents 1, then back to References and selected Custom to remove "show pages" and set levels to 1, as Kindle wants. the custom table appears But KDP won't accept it. Still says Missing. Looked for help online and one post said to update the TOC, which I hadn't done. So I went back. Now, I'd highlighted and tagged all chapter headings to Heading One, of course. KDP says to create an Auto 1 version of the TOC first, so I did it all again, and this first TOC, the A1 version, I can update and "update all fields" comes up like normal. When I take the next step and change the TOC to a custom table, as directed by KDP, I cannot update it. No dialogue box appears, nothing. I tried toggle field codes and on the custom table the fields are fine, as they should be. Track changes is off, I've tried re-doing the table many times and the result is the same. I contacted Microsoft help and an operator came into my computer and reloaded Office and 365 and told me this would fix the problem, and it didn't. I contacted them again and the operator told me to do all the steps I had done. Then he told me to try a manual table by typing in the field codes. I did this and nothing happened when I pressed F9 to initiate. He told me to come here. The TOCs were inputted using References, Table of contents, I did not input them manually (aside from the time I tried the above advice). I have tried going back through and tagging the chapter headings to Heading One again, but the same thing just keeps happening; it will update the table if it is Automatic Table 1, but not when I change it to custom. And it has to be custom because ebooks don't have the page numbers showing, and only use Heading One. F9 also does nothing to update the table, and I've tried both Update Table and Update Fields and neither work. I've tried opening the document in a new file, and the same problem happens. So, please help. Why would Word not be updating the custom table, when it will update the Automatic? System config Windows XI MS office: latest version Publishing software: Adobe InDesign (2025) Issue faced: We have 2 documents doc and docx. Same document and different format of word (doc and docx). Scenario 1: Doc If I flowed the doc file in InDesign there is no issue. I got the correct character style no extra style is there. Please refer the below screen shot there is only 1 character style "Strong" Scenario 2: DocX If I flowed the docx file in InDesign i am facing issue there is some extra character style with unnamed character style please refer the below screenshot. If we right click shows "^1" it seems to be junk style Please let us know why this issue arising between doc and docx file. Is there, or could there be either, a newer addition to, or a third-party app for allowing text formatting to be displayed via the Text Formatting Indicator? Currently, the Text Formatting Indicator will display an icon if the caps lock, dictation, or language are in use. I'm trying to create a merged document using Microsoft Access as my recipient database. My database has 2 fields from which I am filtering to create two individual mail merged letters. However, I wish to exclude any record from my merged file that is selected in BOTH fields. (I will be sending these records their own merged letter) I have no problem selecting the common records (those "checked" in both fields) to be printed, however, I wish to EXCLUDE these records from printing. (i.e. to not print these records) Can anyone give me advise on how to do this? (The 2 fields in my Access file are check boxes; True/False). I have a problem with the context menu in word 2016. When I select the text and click the right mouse button, the context menu opens, while the first, separate item "search in the menus" (picture 1.) appears to me, while behind it is a large space. If I want to find other items in the popup window, I have to start scrolling in it (Figure 2.). Only after the window is fully rolled do I see other items of the pop-up window (Figure 3.). It's interesting that this doesn't happen when you click on the image, it only shows up incorrectly when you click on the highlighted text. It's quite frustrating and it's weighing on me. It was working fine until recently and just recently it changed arbitrarily. I am asking for advice on how to correct this deficiency. I am dyslexic and use the “Read aloud” function in Word to find errors in texts. For no apparent reason, the TTS voice has changed to the basic Windows voice. Now it is very difficult for me to find the errors because the voices are very simple and basic. I have tried to change them in a thousand ways, but to no avail. - I have restored the system, - uninstalled and reinstalled Word. - formatted the PC. In short, the TTS voices I bought Word for are gone. I use Windows 11 and Office Professional Plus 2021 (purchased on April 8, 2023 in the Fnac Store) This has happened to me on all my PCs. I feel robbed. SPANISH: Soy Disléxico, y utilizo la función Leer en voz alta de Word para encontrar errores en los textos. Sin ningún motivo, la voz TTS ha cambiado a las de base de Windows. Ahora me cuesta muchísimo encontrar los errores porque las voces son muy simples y básicas. He intentado cambiarla de mil formas, pero no lo he conseguido. - He Restaurado el sistema, - Desinstalado y vuelto a instalar el Word. - Formateado el PC. Recently this icon appeared on my toolbar in Word 365 on iPad. It’s an ad for purchasing Copilot Pro, and it is in the first position on the top-right toolbar. Not only that but it obscures the center toolbar, and I can find no setting or method to get rid of it. The toolbar is not the place for ads on a paid product--especially not ones that cover up the actual software functions--and I have no interest in Copilot Pro. Hello everyone My problem is If I have text-to-speech enabled for half an hour, I get an error message telling me to log in even though I am alrady logged in. After that, I can only select the bad voices for text-to-speech and the playback speed is at 1000% until I restart the app, then it goes again for half an hour. So I was introduced to section breaks as a means of getting page numbering up-to-spec for book I've written (roman. numerals in the front material, arabic numerals in the book itself). I'm using the latest version of Word (16.8?) on Mac. To my horror, I've found that it is impossible to delete section breaks once they're in my document. I have spend an entire day in Google on this subject, and every single suggestion fails. So I have enabled showing markup, so I can see page breaks, section breaks, paragraphs I cannot select a section break. Word will not allow that. So I can't select and delete it. I cannot put the cursor after a section break and then hit the delete button as many suggest. Word will not allow the cursor to be placed after a section break. Putting the cursor before the section break, as other articles recommend, is just wrong. All you're doing there is deleting text before the section break. Why is this so hard? I've lost a whole day on something that should be simple.
